So this weekend we got a close lightning strike and, among other things, we lost our cable modem and routers. Now those devices are toast so I'm replacing them but while I'm shopping I decided to look for an UPS as well.

Anyone got one they have seen in action or own and could recommmend?

At work we use APC which is a reputable brand for UPS's. They cover all sizes including smaller ones for domestic use. For something really serious you can get one with a connection to your computer (serial, USB, NIC) and when the power fails it will keep your computer going for a few minutes before performing a graceful shutdown.

Alternatively, you can just get one of those UPS's that behaves like a 4-gang power extension but has a big battery in it as well.

You might want to consider a product like Eaton whole home protection. It has a module for cable, phone lines and one that connects to your beaker panel This is as well as a ups.
